Ecce Puer (It’s a Boy) by James Joyce

Joyce wrote Ecce Puer in 1932 after the death of his father, John Joyce. James was guilt ridden for not having responded to his father’s request for him to visit Ireland before the old man died. The poem also celebrates the birth of his grandson Stephen James Joyce on February 15th 1932. Stephen is still alive and well and living in Paris. It is a very sad and poignant poem. ©RogerCummiskey.com

Of the dark past
A child is born;
With joy and grief
My heart is torn.

Calm in his cradle
The living lies.
May love and mercy
Unclose his eyes!

Young life is breathed
On the glass;
The world that was not
Comes to pass.

A child is sleeping:

Joyce escribió Ecce Puer en 1932 después de la muerte de su padre, John Joyce . James se siente culpable por no haber respondido a la petición de su padre por él para visitar Irlanda antes de que el viejo murió . El poema también celebra el nacimiento de su nieto Stephen Joyce el 15 de febrero de 1932. Stephen todavía está vivo y bien y viviendo en París . We will start by reading Chapter six from Ulysses – Hades, Glasnevin cemetery in  YOUR language. Bring your own copy. FRD Excursion to Malaga 2015

We visited he Sur Newspaper Offices and had a talk by Rachel Hynes, Editor and Liz Parry, Former Editor. We also saw the old printing press currently being taken apart. Following this we viewed a film entered for the Goya Awards entitled After this we were shown around the English Cemetery by Bruce McEntyre, President of the Cemetery Foundation and Liz Parry, Secretary.
