Ulysses for All
at the James Joyce Centre


Christmas is over, the tree's in the skip and it's time to make good on your New Year's resolutions! What better way to start your 2017 than by taking on the task of reading Ulysses in time for Bloomsday?

Join us in February at the James Joyce Centre for the return of our popular lifelong learning course, Ulysses for All. Led by Dubliner and Joycean Caroline Elbay, the group will work through the episodes of Joyce’s masterpiece in a structured, accessible and relaxed environment. Beginning on Wednesday 1 February, the course runs over 18 weeks and will finish ahead of Bloomsday on 7 June – just in time for you to boast to the pretenders in costume that you’ve actually read the book! Joyce’s epic has a reputation for inaccessibility and difficulty, but Ulysses for All aims to show that this perception is far from accurate and when the book is read in a structured way it is not only comprehensible but full of humour, insight and beauty.

This year, the Ulysses for All group will be treated to all kinds of bonus events and speakers, including talks by John McCourt and Anne Taylor and even a walking tour of the historic Monto district of Dublin with historian Terry Fagan. So come along and find out why Ulysses For All is the most popular Joycean course in the city!

Departure date: 1 February 2017, 6-8pm (thereafter the group meets each Wednesday from 6-8pm at the Centre)

Arrival date: 7 June 2017

Cost: €160 for 18 weeks / €140 for students, seniors (60+) and the unwaged

We're excited to kick off our Spring/Summer Lecture Series on 6 February with UCD's Dr Luca Crispi, who will discuss the progress that Joyce made in the development of his opus Ulysses one hundred years ago. Dr Crispi's lectures are always a fascinating insight into Joyce's creative process and this one is sure to help explain how Joyce took a simple idea and developed it into an encyclopaedic masterpiece. We'll also be belatedly celebrating Joyce's birthday (2 February) with a wine reception following the lecture!

Anne Taylor


We're delighted to welcome one of our favourite regular visitors Anne Taylor to come talk at the Centre for the first time this February 15. Anne will discuss Joyce's life in Paris and the circle of friends and family that surrounded him in the twenties and thirties as he saw first the publication of Ulysses in 1922 and subsequently began work on his final novel Finnegans Wake.

Bloomsday - Spain 2017

We will start by reading Chapter six from Ulysses – Hades, Glasnevin cemetery in  YOUR language. Bring your own copy. A fun get together providing the opportunity to become fully or partially immersed in –  sea water. Bloomsday – June 16th  – is an annual celebration among Joyce fans throughout the world, from Fuengirola to Melbourne. It is celebrated in at least sixty countries worldwide. The novel,  Ulysses , by James Joyce recounts the hour-by-hour events of one day in Dublin – June 16, 1904 – as an ordinary Dubliner, Leopold Bloom, wends his way through the urban landscape, the odyssey of a modern-day Ulysses. For the sixth year we are planning a simple reading, swim or paddle off the beach on Bloomsday this year on  Thursday, 16th June .  What makes our event a little different is that the readers are encouraged to read their pieces in their own language. This is a fun, non intellectual, nor threatening event. And it is  FREE.  All that is required is that you turn up on time to participate. It will be a memorable occasion. A fun get together!
