Description:

Papli

This is a childish drawing of Leopold Bloom by his daughter Milly as described by James Joyce.

I have reversed the letter "L" to give it a childlike appearance.

The description of the drawing is contained in the second last chapter of Ulysses, "Ithaca", located in Bloom's house, 7, Eccles Street.

Bloom opens the first drawer of his chest of drawers which contains a "Vere Foster's handwriting copybook, property of Milly (Millicent) Bloom..... diagram drawings marked Papli, which showed a large globular head with 5 hairs erect, 2 eyes in profile, the trunk full front with 3 large buttons, 1 triangular foot,....."

I hope that you can enjoy it's simplicity!

Picasso once admitted that it had taken him 50 years to learn how to paint like a child.

On a recent visit to Israel (2011) I was struck by the simplicity of some of the drawings that I observed and as I thought about it I decided that what more simple than Add, Subtract, Divide and Multiply – every childs first school recollections.

Bloomsday - June 16th - is an annual celebration among Joyce fans throughout the world, from Fuengirola to Melbourne. It is celebrated in at least sixty countries worldwide, but nowhere so imaginatively, of course, as in Dublin. The novel, Ulysses, by James Joyce recounts the hour-by-hour events of one day in Dublin - June 16, 1904 - as an ordinary Dubliner, Leopold Bloom, wends his way through the urban landscape, the odyssey of a modern-day Ulysses.

Nueva Arte - an AIA exhibition

In the tranquil village of Villanueva de la Concepción, nestled at the foot of the Torcal mountain range in Antequera the latest Andalusian International Artists Group exhibition will be taking place in the Sala de Exposiciónes in the Ayuntamiento Casa del La Cultura.

The eight participating artists from three countries are Enrique Linaza and Juan Cruz, Spain; Roger Cummiskey, Dolores Cummiskey and Philip Magee; Ireland; Nalini Shanthi Cook, Olivia Garner, and Richard Wood, UK.

The exhibition runs from the 06 May to the 22 May on Fridays from 5-8 PM; Saturdays from 11-2 and 5-8 pm and Sundays from 11-02. All are invited to an opening preview reception on Friday 06 May 2011 from 7.00-8.30 pm.

The AIA-ArtGroup was formed six years ago by professional and dedicated visual artists from around the world, who are all living and working in Andalucía.

Dublin - UNESCO City of Literature

Dublin now joins Iowa, Melbourne and Edinburgh as designated UNESCO Cities of Literature. This is a permanent title.

It is with great pleasure that I heard this news during the week.

Everyone in and from Dublin is delighted that UNESCO has honoured the city by designating it as a UNESCO City of Literature.

It is good news and gets us away from the greed and stupidity that have been the highlights of the news for too long.

Vive Dublin! Proud Dubliner abroad.

The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural organization (UNESCO) created the award as part of it’s Creative Cities Network. The network was designed to promote the social, economic and cultural development of cities in both the developed and the developing world.

Speaking about the award. Mary Hanafin T.D., Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport said “Dublin has been awarded this accolade because of the rich historical literary past of the city, the vibrant contemporary literature, the variety of festivals and attractions available and because it is the birthplace and home of literary greats”.

She added, “Names such as Swift, O’Casey, Wilde, Shaw, Behan, Beckett and Joyce are synonymous with Dublin and there are reminders of their great literary works throughout the city – which captures both scholars and tourist imaginations when they visit the city.”

Ms Hanafin added: “Being one of only four cities in the world to achieve the status of Unesco City of Literature will enable Dublin to increase its market share of tourists and attract more people to both the city and the island of Ireland.”

What does this designation signify? Primarily it acts as a branding tool. It demonstrates that writing is cherished in Ireland. There will be a cultural impact and there may also be an economic one if properly harnessed.

The designation focuses attention on the role of the artist in the community. Society needs both moneymakers and artists, of course, because wealth-creators allow people to earn the money to buy an artist’s work.

The application to UNESCO was made by a steering and management group led by Dublin City Council’s library service. People who believe in the worth of books beyond any monetary value beavered away on this for three years in the belief it could benefit Ireland.

Bamboozled! You cannot win all the time.

Artwise it has been a very full couple of weeks.

I have been places, done and seen things that I have not done nor seen before.

One of the most unusual for me was going to the Danish Church in Las Lagunas. What a stunning modern edifice even in these cold winter times. It is around eight years old and I have passed it a few times but like Synagogues and other churches with which we do not have an affinity one is inclined to look, take note and pass by.

What brought me to the Danish church was a small show by "The three Pianists". A classically trained young woman pianist, a really ancient English guy who either knew or was in the wings with Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and Judy Garland, and a pub pianist who had travelled extensively on cruise ships but never lost his Londoness. Nostalgia and a tear were the feature of the evening shared with almost 200 others.

I opened a joint exhibition in Fuengirola of my own work on Tuesday to an empty house! You cannot win all the time.

On Wednesday I took a trip into Málaga City to visit the latest at the CAC and to plan an event that I have done before entitled ARTDayMálaga. This will take place on March 23 next. This day out embraces visiting visual art exhibitions in Málaga City which next time will include the Episcopal Palace and the usual suspects such as the Picasso birthplace, MuseoPicasso and the Casa Archivo culminating in a Málaga vino tipple in the Antigua Casa Guardia that I first visited in 1963 and can assure you that the decor has not changed!

There is an interesting exhibition now on at the Casa de la Cultura in Fuengirola that was attended by some of the local Councillors whom I recognize from Fuengirola TV where they get great milage specifically designed no doubt towards re-election. Needless to say the cameras were there.

Oh yes! I nearly forgot to mention that I got a registered letter from the culture department of the Ayuntamiento de Fuengirola telling me that my application to do a solo show with them during 2010 had been rejected. You cannot win all the time.

During January I was involved in four exhibitions where only one paintings sold! You cannot win all the time.

However, I am pleased that Aena, the Spanish Airport Authority did choose one of my paintings for their corporate collection at Málaga Airport.

Dear Andy

Like many a letter writer I am not sure where to start. Anyway here goes.

I used to come to Spain for over 20 years for my summer holidays and sometimes at Christmas and Easter time with my wife and children when they were all younger. About ten years ago we decided to move more permanently to Spain where I now spend most of my time.

Recently my wife and a couple of friends made a statement that I never go on holiday. Of course I have always been of the mind set that being in Spain was a holiday and I can remember years ago some guy asking me where I was going on holidays that particular year, Miami, California, the Middle east?

I can clearly remember telling him that I had saved most of my working life so that I could settle in Spain and although I have been to many places throughout the World over the years I now live in Spain and do not want to go to other places as in my opinion Spain has as much as I can handle from a Cultural and Sporting point of view.

However the pressure told and we drove off to Chiclana last weekend from Thursday to Sunday. Where´s Chiclana? Well, I have a friend that lives there whom I had met a few times and who asked me to come to Chiclana sometime. This was the opportunity. The wife drove as I am not great at driving. We searched the map and I discovered that it was near Cadiz. It is like a suburb of Cadiz. About 20 minutes by bus to the heart of the old city of Cadiz on the Atlantic ocean. I really knew nothing about Chiclana until I met some of the locals who told me that this year they are celebrating the centenary their defeat of Napoleon´s armies. Now Chiclana is a small town but about7 km. away is their beach which has loats of multi starred hotels and the usual spick and span tourist setups for the rich and famous. The beach is very long and everybody on it was well wrapped up as the wind was high.

A trip to Cadiz also opened the eyes as this town also withstood the invasions by Napoleon at the same time, is or certainly has been a very important port for traders going back yonks. Did you know that Christopher Columbus started his second voyage to the Americas from Cadiz? Did you know that in 2012 the Spanish Constitution will celebrate 200 years having been drafted in Cadiz? Did you know that the Tavira Tower in Cadiz while not the oldest is the highest and houses a camera oscura? More about that another time!

Now! Am I a Tourist or simply a holiday maker?

And Patrick banished the snakes from Ireland in 432 AD.

“Agh, the usual routine on St Patrick´s Day, Mass, J.Bs, El Castillo for Richies Dublin Coddle”.

Guaranteed no shortage of chat, craic, singin´ and drink!

I always thought that Saint Patrick was all to do with Drink, a day off school and work, pubs closed and a dog show in the RDS in Dublin. But NO!

I checked it out on the net & and lo and behold:

It is unclear exactly where Patricius Magonus Sucatus (Patrick) was born–somewhere in the west between the mouth of the Severn and the Clyde–but this most popular Irish saint was probably born in Scotland of British origin, perhaps in a village called Bannavem Taberniae. (Other possibilities are in Gaul or at Kilpatrick near Dunbarton, Scotland.) His father, Calpurnius, was a deacon and a civil official, and his grandfather was a priest.

About 405, when Patrick was in his teens (14-16), he was captured by Irish raiders and became a slave in Ireland. There in Ballymena (or Slemish) in Antrim (or Mayo), Patrick first learned to pray intensely while tending his master’s sheep. After six years, he was told in a dream that he should be ready for a courageous effort that would take him back to his homeland.

He ran away from his owner and travelled 200 miles to the coast. His initial request for free passage on a ship was turned down, but he prayed, and the sailors called him back. The ship on which he escaped was taking dogs to Gaul (France). At some point he returned to his family in Britain, then seems to have studied at the monastery of Lerins from 412 to 415.

He received some kind of training for the priesthood in either Britain or Gaul, possibly in Auxerre, including study of the Latin Bible, but his learning was not of a high standard, and he was to regret this always. He spent the next 15 years at Auxerre were he became a disciple of Saint Germanus of Auxerre and was possibly ordained about 417.

It is said that in visions he heard voices in the wood of Focult (Focault) or that he dreamed of Ireland and determined to return to the land of his slavery as a missionary. In that dream or vision he heard a cry from many people together and he read a writing in which this cry was named ‘the voice of the Irish.’

There is no reliable account of his work in Ireland, where he had been a captive. Legends include the stories that he drove snakes from Ireland, and that he described the Trinity by referring to the shamrock, and that he singlehandedly–an impossible task–converted Ireland. Nevertheless, St. Patrick established the Catholic Church throughout Ireland on lasting foundations: he travelled throughout the country preaching, teaching, building churches, opening schools and monasteries, converting chiefs and bards, and everywhere supporting his preaching with miracles.

At Tara in Meath he is said to have confronted King Laoghaire on Easter Eve with the Christian Gospel, kindled the light of the paschal fire on the hill of Slane, confounded the Druids into silence, and gained a hearing for himself as a man of power. He converted the king’s daughters. He threw down the idol of Crom Cruach in Leitrim. Patrick wrote that he daily expected to be violently killed or enslaved again.

And a bit more!

We are told that often Patrick baptized hundreds on a single day. He would come to a place, a crowd would gather, and when he told them about the true God, the people would cry out from all sides that they wanted to become Christians. Then they would move to the nearest water to be baptized.

On such a day Aengus, a prince of Munster, was baptized. When Patrick had finished preaching, Aengus was longing with all his heart to become a Christian. The crowd surrounded the two because Aengus was such an important person. Patrick got out his book and began to look for the place of the baptismal rite but his crozier got in the way.

The bishop’s crozier often has a spike at the bottom end, probably to allow the bishop to set it into the ground to free his hands. So, when Patrick fumbled searching for the right spot in the book so that he could baptize Aengus, he absent-mindedly stuck his crosier into the ground just beside him–and accidentally through the foot of poor Aengus!

Patrick, concentrating on the sacrament, never noticed what he had done and proceeded with the baptism. The prince never cried out, nor moaned; he simply went very white. Patrick poured water over his bowed head at the simple words of the rite. Then it was completed. Aengus was a Christian. Patrick turned to take up his crozier and was horrified to find that he had driven it through the prince’s foot!

“But why didn’t you say something? This is terrible. Your foot is bleeding and you’ll be lame. . . .” Poor Patrick was very unhappy to have hurt another.

Then Aengus said in a low voice that he thought having a spike driven through his foot was part of the ceremony. He added something that must have brought joy to the whole court of heaven and blessings on Ireland:

“Christ,” he said slowly, “shed His blood for me, and I am glad to suffer a little pain at baptism to be like Our Lord” (Curtayne).

In art, St. Patrick is represented as a bishop driving snakes before him or trampling upon them.

At times he may be shown

(1) preaching with a serpent around the foot of his pastoral staff;

(2) holding a shamrock;

(3) with a fire before him; or

(4) with a pen and book, devils at his feet, and seraphim above him.

Saint Patrick is the patron sint of Nigeria (which was evangelized primarily by Irish clergy) and of Ireland and especially venerated at Lerins.

Interestingly, the things that Saint Patrick never got involved with as far as we can tell is, drink, dressing up, dancing, singing or craic of any sort!

Dear Andy,

I spent a few hours and met an English guy called Joe in the bar where I watched Leinster and London Irish knock the living daylights out of each other on Saturday in the Heineken Cup rugby match.

The bar is in Fuengirola and has Sky TV and luckily on a day when it was bucketing down outside and the wind was howling, the Missuses umbrella had done an inside out turn and wanted to head off to warmer climes, they had the heating on and a choice of leaving the door open or closed. The trouser legs were wet from the knees down but I did not mind. The hot in the winter and cold in the summer heater would soon solve that problem.

At half time I took a stroll around the pub looking at the pictures and photographs hanging on the walls. Well it was more of a shuffle as the pub is quite small and the lights low. Now the place was not full. In fact there were only three others and the two staff members who turned up the music during half time just in case we wanted to listen to the studio experts waffling on about what we had seen during the first half taking place at Twickenham.

Joe, having overheard some of our conversations during the first half stated,

“So, you like rugby then?”

“Yes,” I said.

“I know nothing about rugby, I prefer football. How are Leeds getting on against Spurs?” Joe says.

“ I haven’t a clue but I think that it might be on the telly in the pub next door.” I said.

“Could never understand the rules.” says Joe.

I decided not to answer him as I wanted to look at the paintings and the photographs and anyway I have difficulty with the rules myself since they made all the changes. The wife is now an expert and sees things that I don’t, like the guys coming in to the side of the loose ruck. She also puts a lot of the players off side and only occasionally asks me “What was that for? Who is that Ref? Where is he from?”

“Wales” I say, knowing that the conversation will stop there because she is not yet well up on Welsh referees or any referees for that matter.

“On holiday?” says Joe. “No.” said I. “Live here then?” “Yes.” “Shite weather!” says Joe

Some of the photographs were of film stars of yesteryear; others were of advertising that was well known in the 50s and 60s. An interesting and varied selection obviously put together by an enthusiastic proprietor over the years who has an interest in film, music and that era - the olden days!

“What did you do?” says Joe. “When?” I answered in typical Irish fashion.

“What did you do for a crust?” says Joe. “I’m an Artist” I said.

“So you’re an Artist!” says Joe.

The match ended in a draw. Leeds got a result against Spurs. They drew!

The missus and myself bid Joe and company farewell and headed off in partially dry clothes to battle against the rain and wind on our stroll home.

Elaine Carlton and Roger Cummiskey are Members of the Andalusian International Artists Group (aia-group.net) formed over 5 years ago by artists from all over Europe and the USA.

Elaine will be displaying a range of her recent work at the NIXS Galería Avda Condes de San Isidro 50 (between Zara and Policía Local) in Fuengirola, much of which is inspired by and reflects her love of Andalucía. Her work uses a range of textile techniques and media and an excess of fibres and threads.

In this exhibition Rogers also shows images in Oil and Watercolour based on local and sea scenes reflecting the everyday imagery of the area and as Saint Valentine´s Day is just around the corner you might like to surprise a loved one with a special gift.

You can meet both artists at 6pm next Tuesday 2 February. The exhibition will run through to 22 February. Opening times 11am to 2pm and 5pm to 10pm.

Agh! The Gargle!

Dear Andy

Last Saturday a man and his wife asked me about one of my paintings from my James Joyce series. They were very English with that sort of accent of yesteryear one does not hear too often around the Costa del Sol. I was a little surprised when they told me that they had lived in Dublin and went to Trinity College back in the 1950s.

Trinity College is the old Alma Mater of Samuel Beckett the Nobel Prize winner in Literature. James Joyce was a graduate of University College, Dublin, part of the National University of Ireland. Joyce and Beckett struck up a friendship in the 1920s in Paris. Beckett acted as Secretary to Joyce for some time while Joyce was writing Finnegans Wake. Both were Dubliners. So am I.

I was curious, however, as to why this older English couple were so interested in the painting the title of which is “Good Puzzle would be to Cross Dublin without passing a Pub!” They became animated as the painting has about 20 pubs names on it that trade today under the same name as they did back in 1904.

They began to reminisce about their time in Dublin and it appears that like all good English men and women they were partial to the odd one eight of a gallon or two as young students in Dublin in the 50s.

The names of the pubs and their locations were a great source of merriment and brought forth stories of the craic that they had enjoyed as students back in Dublin. Their faces lit up as they remembered the names of the pubs and their locations around the City of Dublin.

In his writings Joyce mentioned about 100 different imbibing emporiums about 40 of which still trade under the same name over 100 years later.

During the last five years, the AIA-Group has been focusing on building up networks between artists and businesses that wish to be associated with the Arts throughout Andalucía. Their members have exhibited in the area stretching from the Casa de la Cultura in Competa, via Torre del Mar, Malaga City all the way down to Gibraltar and inland to Álora via Estepona, Marbella, Monda, La Cala, Mijas Pueblo, Valtocado and Fuengirola. Their professional approach to exhibiting has endeared them to the culturally interested public that attend all of their exhibitions. They are ably supported by mentors who are non artists and as a self help group have generated an energy that is admirable.
